I don’t look for skill in art…Skill has nothing to do with technical proficiency… I’m interested in people who rethink skill, who redefine or reimagine it: an engineer, say, who builds rockets from rocks.

The Art Of Music

Some of the best-known musical talents can’t read or write a note of music. These musicians are just as talented, and in some cases, more talented than their formally trained counterparts.

Some art critics, and professionally trained peers have a generalized and elitist view about those who are self-taught. A degree in any field is a major accomplishment in life, but that alone does not determine the talent and skill of the artist. This biased belief may cause exclusion from avenues that can lead to career success, but many have succeeded, in spite of any classification placed upon them.

I Love Music

There are a few musicians you may know who beat the odds and achieved incredible success without formal training, in fact, they couldn’t read or write a note of music. Here’s just a shortlist of musicians who beat the odds and soared to the top of the Billboard list.

  • The Beatles
    Eric Clapton
    Elvis Presley
    Eddie Van Halen
    Jimi Hendrix
    The Beach Boys
    Frank Sinatra
    The Mamas & the Papas

According to Music. Mic, some eminently respected music educators think that learning music as a series of symbols merely distracts students from what is really important about music – sound.

Here’s an addition to this post. There is online musical training that is not formal, who’s mission is to help anyone with a musical “ear” to play an instrument. https://www.musical-u.com

Self-Taught Visual Artists

As a self-taught artist, graphic and web designer, and writer, I see the prevalence of exclusion in the Philadelphia visual arts community. The music industry is not the only creative community that shuns creatively talented people. Art Snobs and critics alike subscribe to the same limited school of thought.

Artists, just like musicians, reached a plateau of success despite the critics’ branding.

The Short List Of Highly Uneducated Artists

  • Paul Gaughan – Sailor to Stockbroker to Artist
Henri Rousseau – Soldier to Customs Officer to retirement painter
Anna Mary – (Grandma Moses) – 1600 works of art – No Training
Modern Day Artist, London’s Helen Downie began painting after traumatic life experiences in 2013 and rose to fame in two years flat.

Passion And Creativity

Creative talent is synonymous with passion. One does not exist without the other.

Did you ever meet a corporate employee who is truly passionate about their nine to five?

Did you ever watch the transformation occur when an artist discusses his/her work? Passion stimulates the mind and soul; it’s clearly visible when a face begins to glow, or a smile grows larger than life.

A degree in the arts does not define a person, nor does it determine creative ability; what makes an artist is true passion. Innermost feelings on a canvas, metal and stone sculpted to reveal a masterpiece of raw emotion, and words and music, a conduit for soul-bearing.

Credit belongs to all artists, in any genre – the self-taught and the professionally trained, from the historical masters to their present day contemporaries. Respecting the passion that lies behind the work should be most important, not the educational prerequisite.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]
